Birds Fly South

from A Season Lost by Jeff Zentner

/

lyrics

birds fly south in autumn
to escape the cold

they fly among the grey clouds
that hide the fallen world below

one day i was feeling fallen
and like november inside

i stood and watched the grey november sky
for some heavenly sign

then on the horizon
i saw flecks of black appear

birds flying in formation
to someplace far from here

they passed overhead
wingbeats loud in the still air

i watched them fade into the distance
and slowly disappear

i stood there for a long time
afraid to even breathe

there are things older than sorrow
ancient rhythms of this world

the soil has no memory
neither does the air

wingbeats sound for a time
then they also disappear
