1.
sometimes i stay awake after you’ve gone to sleep lying in the dark i listen to you breathe the rise of your chest and i lie there and think about the motion of the earth as it circles round the sun the rolling of the tides as they break upon the shores there are just two things that could take me from your side the motion of the earth the rolling of the tides we have so little time we have so little time we have so little time we can still defeat the motion of the earth we can still defeat the rolling of the tides come with me outside it snows just twice a year it whispers as it falls watch the running deer they run before the snow their fauns at their side
2.
i’ve got one thing to say to you i love you deeply yes i do the sun was out today i went to the park and thought of you the warmth washed over me like a sea i was there for hours it seemed until stars were out in the sky the twilight was soft and warm and green the air smelled like honey in the failing light
3.
it's a season lost that haunts my mind i didn't see the snow fall i didn't see the leaves fall i didn't feel the summer sun i was swept along in the river's flow it's a season lost that haunts my mind i didn't see the snow fall i didn't see the leaves fall
4.
this is all i have to give is it good enough for you is it good enough for us? on quiet afternoons do you think of me like i think of you? at three a.m., do you go for aimless walks to drive me from your head? when you wake from restless dreams do you turn and look for me in your deserted bed? honey do you love me like i love you? honey do you need me like i need you? do you breathe for me like i breathe for you? do you bleed for me like i bleed for you? do you run your fingers down your neck, tracing down the paths that i long to kiss? do the stars of summer shine on desire breathed between the beating of two hearts? were we born to this were we born to taste this longing on our lips? honey do you love me like i love you? honey do you need me like i need you? do you breathe for me like i breathe for you? do you bleed for me like i bleed for you?
5.
you’re a burning in my heart a fire in my bones a whisper on my lips a secret on my tongue you’re a lamplight street scent of magnolia blooms the wind before a storm a white harvest moon i always dream of you when i’m awake words leave my head when i see your face you dance in my mind like waves of summer heat rising from a road whose end you never reach you’re a burning in my heart a fire in my bones a whisper on my lips a secret on my tongue you’re my midnight song my body’s heat my sweet perfume a storm on my sea
6.
sometimes things just fall apart and leave pieces on the floor you pick your way through the broken shards as you turn and walk out that door just turn and walk away autumn comes and leaves will fall in passing golden hues the blush of summer's past and gone and the cold of winter looms and you wait for skies of blue sometimes we stand in fire's path to see what it consumes we stand in silent disbelief at all the things we lose just see what it consumes
7.
Leaving 02:59
i've learned about leaving a city like a lover in the night i wake before dawn i don't say goodbye i watch the lights fade as i'm driving away somehow it always seems to rain that day i never manage to stay dry your tears are just the same they dampen where i once lay and you'll both forget me one day i only wish that i could say the same newness and possibility these are powerful things these are the drugs that i crave these are the things that hold sway over me
8.
White Horses 04:02
for all my life i've had visions of horses running through my waking mind they ran beside me they never tired my constant companions day and night now i have visions of two white horses running beside a cool clear stream their breath is hot in the gathering winter they shine like moonlight on the new-fallen snow someday perhaps they will stop running and lay themselves down under leaf-filled skies and leave me to dream of those days of bright summer when i still had white horses inside
9.
Devil's Eyes 03:48
you’ve got the devil’s eyes. i can see you every time it rains you’ve got the devil’s eyes. i can see you every time it rains you’ve got the midnight walk. you haunt my dreams every time i sleep you’ve got the midnight walk. you haunt my dreams every time i sleep you’ve got the serpent’s tongue. you fill my mind with your pretty lies you’ve got the serpent’s tongue. you fill my mind with your pretty lies you’ve got the poison lips. you hand me fruit from the cursed tree you’ve got the poison lips. you hand me fruit from the cursed tree you’ve got the raven hair. you’ll surely be the death of me you’ve got the raven hair. you’ll surely be death of me.
10.
Home 04:14
when will you come back home there's a place for you here a fire's burning in the hearth the table's set with a fine meal when will you come in from the cold your breath hangs on the air like smoke your cheeks are flushed and red as blood you turn to face the raw wind when will you shelter from the storm the rain has soaked you to the bone the driving wind drowns out your voice the tornado sirens howl and moan when will you find your way out of the woods it's grown too dark to see the trail you've fallen and skinned both your knees nobody knows yet that you're lost

birds fly south in autumn to escape the cold they fly among the grey clouds that hide the fallen world below one day i was feeling fallen and like november inside i stood and watched the grey november sky for some heavenly sign then on the horizon i saw flecks of black appear birds flying in formation to someplace far from here they passed overhead wingbeats loud in the still air i watched them fade into the distance and slowly disappear i stood there for a long time afraid to even breathe there are things older than sorrow ancient rhythms of this world the soil has no memory neither does the air wingbeats sound for a time then they also disappear

about

"it's one of those records that says so much with so little, and quite frankly there was a night not so long ago when i when i may have had a few beers, threw this on, and got a little weepy. zentner’s lyrics hit me like a brick, cause they’re so identifiable, at least to me or really anyone with a heart and soul. the background vocals, i cant forget to mention, definitely add a layer of emotion and need for some kind of connection, to someone or anything. one of the best of 2012, for sure"

--Captain's Dead

"But Lost proves, with each of its 11 tracks, that he's completely trustworthy as a musician, too. There's not so much as a stumble, let alone a misstep, and Zentner remains true to his vision from start to finish . . . This is music for reflection, for rainy days and firefly-lit nights. These are songs that flicker and sigh and recall lost affection and the brief fragility of life. In a good way."

--Asheville Mountain Xpress

"I’ve had Jeff Zentner’s new album, A Season Lost, for weeks now and after listening to it more than a dozen times, I still can’t quite describe its beauty, but I can tell you what draws me to to it time-and-time again."

--Common Folk Music

"given my propensity to tagging bands, songs, artists with such lazy and sophomoric labels as 'awesome,' 'killer,' 'lovely,' 'great,' 'most excellent,' etc it may seem that my vocabulary is quite limited, but you would only be half right. sometimes, even i get hung up and such trite phrases just ain't gonna cut it. such is the case with asheville native, jeff zentner"

--Captain's Dead

"...Without fail, the lyrics read well in their own right as poems, and truly shine out when put to Zentner’s hypnotic, whispering vocals and dreamy arrangements . . . Conjuring images of desolate, rusty small towns, and compelling tales of human tragedy, love, and friendship, the listener is transported away into another world entirely."

--Americana-UK

"his sound is to provide beautifully bleak soundscapes of Americana goodness. Think of a somber Ryan Adams with less piano mixed with Steve Earle without the anger."

--Slowcoustic

"Zentner is a truly breath-taking talent."

--Fresh Deer Meat

"Absolutely first-class, richly lyrical Nashville gothic from Asheville, North Carolina tunesmith Jeff Zentner . . . Darker than Iron & Wine, more deeply steeped in Americana than Nick Cave."

--Lucid Culture

"...Reminding me of a more embellished Nick Drake and recent folk-lovey Fionn Regan, these are beautiful songs that also have a hint of Morrissey about their lyrics. They may be dark, but there’s something wonderfully uplifting about them."

--The Line of Best Fit

"His songs are so beautiful that you won't even mind if they make you a little depressed."

--Triumphs and Tragedies
